An overview of the topic:
With major corporate decisions being made daily around whether to build vs buy and cloud vs colo, Georgia Tech partnered with DataBank to create what is essentially a great research resource, but also a great operations datacenter, for Georgia Tech and others. Before, Georgia Tech was limited by space, power, and cooling in the old datacenter on campus. Now, in addition to having much more space, Georgia Tech is starting out with roughly two megawatts of power and can expand that up to 8-10 megawatts, which gives them the ability to expand well beyond what people had originally envisioned and provides Georgia Tech a means to grow into the future.
DataBank’s ATL1, a 94,000 square foot data center, will serve as a High-Performance Computing Center (HPCC) for Georgia Tech and will house the Southern Crossroads Internet2 network node, providing high-speed, high bandwidth connectivity to research and education sites throughout the region and across the nation.
This session will cover the why to buy vs build and the decision making process to buy, selecting the right partner, and an overview of the project from start to commissioning.
