Best Colocation Providers: Secure, Reliable, And Scalable Solutions For Your Business

Discover our top-notch infrastructure and exceptional support services

Data centers are now vital to the everyday operations of most businesses. That means all businesses need to be sure that they are dealing with a best-in-class provider. Here are five characteristics that indicate a truly excellent colocation vendor.

  • Reliability and uptime guarantees
  • Comprehensive security measures
  • Scalability and flexibility
  • Advanced infrastructure
  • Exceptional customer support

What sets us apart

There are two areas of our service that we feel stand out from the rest and make us one of the best colocation service providers in the USA. These are our top-notch infrastructure and our exceptional support services.

Top-notch infrastructure

We invest heavily in our data centers to ensure that they are always up to the standards modern businesses expect. Here are five of their key features.

Best-in-class security and compliance

Our security measures can be judged by the data security standards in which we are certified. These include FedRAMP, StateRAMP, FISMA, SSAE18, ITAR HIPAA, PCI-DSS, and Privacy Shield – GDPR. We are also ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified.

Our physical security measures include camera surveillance on all ingress/egress points and critical areas. We also implement multi-factor authentication on exterior entry and all data center halls. This features coded access with a secondary biometric scanner.

Our digital security is similarly robust. We deploy a full range of multi-layered network security measures to protect against cyber threats.

Both our physical and digital security measures are overseen by our highly-trained on-site staff. They operate 24*7*365.

Excellent network connectivity

All our data centers have a carrier- and network-neutral design with diverse and secure telecom entries in the carrier-class meet-me-room. Our managed internet services support both IPv4 and IPv6, utilizing a multi-carrier blend with full redundant core routing infrastructure. This supports IPs provided by DataBank or client-owned IP space

Moreover, we have developed a robust interconnection ecosystem. This can put your data and applications within 50 miles of half of the U.S. population and within 10 miles of almost all public cloud regions. These interconnects are available across our footprint of data centers and metros.

Efficient power with high redundancy

Our power is deployed via diverse delivery. Redundancy is based on an N+1 UPS configuration with multiple redundant power distribution paths. We also implement a fully redundant automatic transfer switch (ATS) configuration. Additionally, there is a dedicated on-site fuel supply for each of our backup generators.

Advanced cooling solutions

Our data centers are designed to support high-performance computing deployments. For this reason, effective and cost-efficient cooling is vital.

The base HPC design in our data centers incorporates slab flooring with perimeter cooling. This is ideal for large hyperscale deployments. For higher densities, we can provision technologies such as chilled cabinet doors, direct-to-chip cooling, and immersion cooling. All our cooling solutions are designed to be efficient, economical, and sustainable.

Useful amenities

Our data centers are all equipped with tech lounges where our clients can access free WiFI along with hot and cold beverages and snacks. For clients who need space for focused work, we offer shared and dedicated office space, lunch-and-learn rooms, and multiple well-equipped conference rooms. These facilities can often be made available to clients for wider business activities such as meetings and conferences.

Exceptional support services

We are willing and able to support clients of all sizes and levels of expertise. If you’re an SMB struggling to understand how to make colocation work for you, we’ll guide you through your options in straightforward terms. If you’re a corporation or a major research institution, our experts will work alongside you to create a solution that meets the challenges you face.

If you need hands-on help, then choose from our remote-hands service and our managed services offering (or use them both). Our remote-hands service is perfect when you need somebody you can trust to handle important, one-off tasks. Our managed services offering can lift the burden of even the most challenging (and time-consuming) tasks.

We also extend the principle of support to supporting clients who are performing work using their own staff and/or vendors. For example, we provide hand tools, crash carts, server lifts, and cabling supplies plus both short- and long-term storage options.

Criteria for the best colocation providers

We previously mentioned that there were five key criteria that businesses could use to identify the best colocation providers. Here is some more information on each of these points.

Reliability and uptime guarantees

The best colocation providers offer strong Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with guaranteed uptime, often 99.99% or higher. This ensures that your services remain operational with minimal disruptions. A proven track record of reliability and excellent historical performance data are key indicators that the provider can maintain continuous operations, preventing costly downtime for your business.

Comprehensive security measures

Security is paramount when choosing a colocation provider. Top-tier vendors implement multiple layers of security, including physical security (24/7 surveillance, biometric access controls), network security (firewalls, DDoS protection), and data security (encryption, regular audits).

Implementing these measures enables the best colocation service providers to comply with key data security standards. The more robust a colocation service provider’s security is, the more of the compliance controls they can own. For example, DataBank can own up to 80% of compliance controls.

Scalability and flexibility

As your business develops, your colocation needs are likely to change. A high-quality colocation provider offers scalable solutions that can easily adapt to your evolving requirements. This includes flexible pricing models, customizable service plans, and the ability to scale resources up or down quickly.

Scalability ensures that you can continue to rely on the provider as your business changes. It therefore minimizes the risk of you being forced into a migration at an inconvenient time.

Advanced infrastructure

A high-quality colocation vendor invests in their infrastructure. This includes robust security (physical and digital), high-speed connectivity, sophisticated climate control, energy-efficient power delivery, and advanced hardware. They also implement high levels of redundancy with effective mechanisms for transitioning between systems.

Moreover, the best colocation service providers are quick to recognize and implement new technologies such as AI, edge computing, and quantum computing.

Exceptional customer support

Vendors should offer 24/7 technical support with rapid response times, knowledgeable staff, and multiple channels of communication (phone, email, live chat). Exceptional support ensures that any issues are promptly addressed, minimizing downtime and maintaining seamless operations for your business.

Best colocation service providers in the USA

If you’re looking specifically for the best colocation service providers in the USA then we combine a nationwide presence with local expertise.

Nationwide presence

We currently have data centers in 28 US locations (plus one in London, England). This gives us coverage across the entire country, literally from North to South and from the Eastern to the Western seaboard.

In areas with high demand, we deploy multiple data centers to ensure that users always receive the highest standards of service. For example, we currently have 4 data centers (each) in Northern Virginia and Minneapolis and three in New York City.

Local expertise

Understanding the specific needs of each local market allows colocation providers to offer tailored services and solutions that meet the unique demands of businesses in that region. This customization can include specific compliance requirements, industry standards, and local business practices, ensuring that the colocation services are highly relevant and effective for the clients they serve.

Compliance with local regulations

Different regions have varying regulations and compliance standards related to data protection, privacy, and industry-specific requirements. A deep understanding of these local regulations ensures that colocation providers can help their clients stay compliant, avoiding legal issues and potential fines.

Optimized connectivity and latency

Local market knowledge enables colocation providers to optimize network connectivity and minimize latency by selecting strategic data center locations and partnering with local internet service providers. This ensures faster data transfer speeds and more reliable connections.

Proactive approach to solving problems

Local market knowledge equips colocation providers with the insights needed to anticipate and proactively address potential issues specific to the region. Whether it’s understanding the local power grid stability, climate-related risks, or common business challenges, this awareness allows providers to implement preventive measures and offer more effective, region-specific support.

Enhanced disaster recovery and business continuity planning

Understanding the specific risks and natural disaster patterns of each local market allows colocation providers to develop robust disaster recovery and business continuity plans. This includes selecting data center locations that are less prone to natural disasters, designing infrastructure to withstand regional environmental challenges, and ensuring quick recovery times in the event of an incident.

Smoother approach to business

At a basic level, when businesses operate in the same local area as their customers, they are in the same time zone. This in itself can make business go more smoothly. At a higher level, an understanding of local business practices helps colocation providers build stronger relationships with clients. It allows them to communicate more effectively, align with local business etiquette, and provide a higher level of customer service.
